Located in southern California, Yarn Projects from the Heart is a group of crocheters and knitters who are dedicated in helping others through the love of their craft. We started out as a meetup group in the spring of 2009. Most of our members have been directly or indirectly affected by cancer. It is a horrible disease, and we all want to do something for others who are dealing with the trauma of it. Our handmade hats and scarves go to the patients at local cancer centers and hospitals.
In addition to this project, we make cute little blankets for the cats at a near by animal shelter. The most wonderful thing about this project is that the cats get to take home a blanket when they are adopted. A lot of our members have cats and we can tell you first hand that the cats love to sleep on these blankets.
During the summer of 2011, I created a new project for our group. We are making purple scarves for homeless LGBT teens and young adults. Many of these kids are rejected by their families for being gay and have nowhere to go. Shelters across the states have opened up to welcome these kids and help them with the struggles that they face daily. Our hopes are to send them some love from complete strangers who truly care for them. For me, purple represents bravery and is a color showing protection. If each scarf could give these kids strength to continue with their own life projects, then our mission will be well served.
Our group is growing rapidly and we love having new members. If you would like to join us at one of our meetings or even donate some handmade items (yarn included), contact us at yarnprojectsfromtheheart@gmail.com
